The Evolution of Medicine is thrilled to be back at the Institute for Functional Medicine’s Annual International Conference for the 66th episode of the Functional Forum.

The title of this year’s conference is Stress, Pain and Addiction: Transformative Treatments and Innovative Solutions. Stress, pain and addiction are three threads woven through the tapestry of symptoms and underlying causes of many of the disease states seen in practices across the country. The conference will convene an exceptional group of speakers, and we will be hearing from some of the keynote speakers and members of the Functional Medicine community from around the world, plus share highlights from our pre-party.

Dr. Wayne Jonas, who is a practicing family physician, and expert in integrative health and healthcare delivery, and a widely published scientific investigator. Dr. Jonas is the executive director Samueli Integrative Health Programs, which seeks to increase awareness of and access to integrative health. His latest book, How Healing Works, was published in 2018, and his research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association, Nature Medicine, and The Lancet. Dr. Jonas will be presenting on the healing process and what it means for practitioner education, patients, and the future of healthcare.

Dr. Heather Tick, who has been a leader in the field of pain for nearly 30 years. She was recruited by the University of Arizona Insurance Plan to design and implement the integrative medicine pain clinic, redirecting patients from surgical and pharmacological treatments to non-invasive integrative therapies. She has written and lectured extensively on the topic and brings a unique combination of policy, experience and advocacy.

Dr. Stephen Loyd, who serves as the medical director at JourneyPure at the River in Murfreesboro, TN, and has worked as the medical director and assistant commissioner for Substance Abuse Services with the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. Dr. Loyd has been in long-term recovery from opioids and benzodiazepines since July 9, 2004. Dr. Loyd will be presenting on his personal and professional journey with addiction, and also weighing in on the opioid crisis affecting our nation.

Tracy Gaudet, who is the executive director of the Veterans Health Administration’s (VHA) National Office of Patient-Centered Care and Cultural Transformation. The office is tasked with leading VHA’s transformation to Whole Health, an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and live their lives to the fullest. Dr. Gaudet is a recognized leader in the transformation of healthcare, and she speaks nationally in public and professional venues.
